How is the Southeast Unique?

In general, the Southeastern United States is less healthy than the other regions.

For instance, the Southeast has the lowest life expectancy in the United States at seventy-six and a half years (76.5). The national average for life expectancy is 78.3 years.

Also, the rate of childhood obesity is significantly elevated in the Southeast. At thirty five point ninety-seven percent (35.97%), this region beats the national average by approximately five percent (5%). Mississippi is a large contributor to this elevated average as their childhood obesity rate is about forty-four percent (44.4%).

Furthermore, the rate of children who are born with low birth weight is the highest in the United States at nine point sixty-six percent (9.66%). Eight point zero four percent (8.04%) represents the national average for low birth weight.

Life Expectancy

The Southeast has the lowest life expectancy of any region in the United States at 76.52 years. Mississippi has the lowest in the region at 75.4 years and Virginia has the highest at 78.5 years.

Cardiovascular Related Deaths

303 people, on average, experience death related to cardiovascular reasons per 100,000 population in the Southeastern Region of the United States. Louisiana has a rate of 318 cardiovascular related deaths per 100,000 population making it the healthiest state in this category in the Southeast.

Diabetes Rate

10.65% of the population in the Southeastern United States has diabetes. Alabama has the highest rate of diabetes in the region and the country with a rate of 13.20%. Virginia has the lowest rate of diabetes at 8.7%.

Adult Obesity

The percentage of the population in the Southeastern United States that is considered obese is 30.90%. The least obese state is Virginia at 26.40% and the most obese state is Mississippi at 34.50%.

Childhood Obesity

The Childhood obesity rate in the Southeastern Region of the United States is 35.97%. Children in Virginia have the lowest obesity rate of the region at 31% and children in Mississippi have the highest at 44.40%.

Heart Disease

The percentage of people with heart disease in the Southeastern United States is 4.94%. West Virginia has the highest rate of heart disease in the region at a rate of 6%. Georgia reports the lowest rate at 3.5%.

Smoking Adults

21.29% of the adults in the Southeastern region of the United States regularly smoke. This is significantly higher than the national average of 17.75%. West Virginia has the highest rate of smoking in the United States at 26.8%.

Heart Attack

5.14% of the population in the Southeastern United states has experienced a heart attack. The Southeast has the highest rate of heart attacks in the United States.

Low Birth Weight Babies

9.66% of babies in the Southeastern United States are born with low birth weight. Mississippi has the highest rate of low birth weight babies in the country with a rate of 11.8%.

High Cholesterol

The percentage of the population in the Southeastern United States with high cholesterol is 38.72%.Tennessee has the lowest percentage in the region with a rate of 32.90%. The state with the highest rate of high cholesterol is South Carolina at 41.8%.

Health Status

19.36% of the population in the Southeastern United States consider themselves in poor to fair health. 23.40% of West Virginian’s rate themselves in poor to fair health.

The percentage of the population without health care in the Southeastern United States is 17.15%. 21.30% of the population in Florida don’t have healthcare making it the highest state in this category in the region.

Median Household Income

The median household income of the Southeastern United States is $42,826. This is approximately $8,000 less than the national average. Virginia is significantly higher than the rest of the region with a median household income of $60,363.
